Understand the Stark Differences in Luther's Day No Longer Exist
Although Luther was excommunicated by the Catholic Church (a practice also advocated in protestant
churches to ensure that those who might unduly influence the less mature believers
are excluded from normal fellowship) for centuries, Pope John Paul II lifted this
designation and, although not likely ever to become a Catholic Saint, Luther is
now receiving some respect from some Roman Catholic priests for his indirect part
in reforming the Catholic Church.
For example, many Catholic churches in the
United States sing Luther’s famous “A Mighty Fortress is Our God” and some
traditional Catholic churches in Europe now quote his writings from time to time.
No doubt the modern Catholic Church today, at least certain parishes, would be
judged radically protestant by those who lived in Luther’s day!
Given the universal Christian understanding of the Biblical concepts of salvation by faith, evidenced by works as per James 2:17, there is now, in our opinion, no difference between the recognized denominations significant enough to prevent the larger Body of Christ from embracing one another in Christian love and fellowship. Consequently, we're happy to have a role in bringing all Christians, whatever the flavor, together in a unified memorial site. In this way, we reflect God's heavenly design: after all, heaven is a place where the larger Body of Christ will no doubt be unified, where the labels we wear now will have little meaning.
